“When I started in my addiction, I was at a point in my life where I felt lost and like I had no place here. I felt disconnected from Joanna, the real Joanna. The woman I once was; the mother, the wife, daughter, sister, and the aunt. I felt I didn’t have a purpose on this earth. What was my life’s purpose? I didn’t feel like I mattered to anyone and that no one cared. In my first 30 days, I took a class called NOSTOS. In that class, I found myself again. I even learned more about who I am, and where I want to be in life. In those days first 30 days, I started to feel again. That was something I stopped during in my addiction. Not once before NOSTOS have I ever been able to stand in front of the mirror and say, ‘I’m beautiful!’ While I was getting ready for NOSTOS, I was able to look up at myself and say out loud, ‘Wow, I’m beautiful.’ Every time I get to sit in a class at Freedom House, I learn something new about myself or about my recovery. I’ve learned to forgive myself, forgive others, and to make amends. These smart, beautiful women told me ‘You can’t change your past, but you can control your future.’ In the beginning I didn’t see how, but while in NOSTOS with those women, I saw what they meant and learned how to do a lot of self-care, going out, and having fun. The best part is I’m sober!” – Joanna
